"Usually very rational and frank, but once you anger him you better run for your life. He hates Lucifer and is going through a rebellious phase."
— Satan's Student ID

Satan is a demon whose first appearance in Obey Me!'s Main Story was in Lesson 1-2. He has six brothers, and as the fourth-most powerful of the seven, he holds the title of "fourth-born." He also possesses the title "Avatar of Wrath" and is a representative of that sin. As one of the main characters in Obey Me!, he is included in the game's Intimacy system.

Appearance[edit]

Satan has layered, blond hair with a part in the middle. His skin is pale, and his eyes are a gradient of teal green and lemon yellow. Like his siblings, he has painted nails, his being kelly green in color. His appearance is in some ways the polar opposite of Lucifer's, such as his light-colored hair while Lucifer's is dark, and a common pose that Satan takes when standing is a mirrored version of Lucifer's. Satan and Mammon and are the only brothers whose final design was not changed after their original concept arts.

As seen in the official height chart, Satan is the third-tallest of the seven brothers, only somewhat taller than Leviathan.

Satan has polished black scaly S-shaped horns and black spiky tail which fades into light green. According to Issue 5 of the RAD Newspaper, said tail can injure those who touch it if they aren't careful. He neatly wears a dark gray dress shirt with hidden buttons, white collars, and cuffs, as well as black pants with widely-scattered white dots.

Above his shirt is a black ribbon whose ends are elaborately weaved into modest loops on and across his chest in a ribcage-esque way, revealing much of its green underside. He completes the look with a black boa over his shoulders and fancy white embellished belt. His demonic markings are located on his back.

Personality[edit]

Satan is a lover of knowledge and of possessing knowledge. His room is filled with books and tomes, all of which he has read, and he's spent so much time in the Devildom's Royal Library that he knows where every book is located, as seen in the Devilgram The Search for Self. This proves he must have an excellent memory, as he told MC that this library "contains every single book ever published here in the Devildom." In Lesson 9-7 of the Main Story, he told MC that "Knowledge is power. People respect someone who's well-informed."

Satan also spends much of his time visiting places like art galleries and museums. This is because he wants to do his best to make sure he "grows as a person," as he commented in the Devilgram The Search for Self. He can at times look down on some media forms, such as manga. However, after Leviathan pranked Satan by replacing his book with manga in the Trick Quest Devilgram, Satan read it, and admitted he may have been too critical about manga.

In many ways, Satan is both a loner, yet also a socialite. He spends much of his time in the House of Lamentation or the library reading alone, and regularly goes places by himself. However, he also often makes new acquaintances at the many "upscale" places he tends to visit, and these people then invite him to attend events where he makes even more acquaintances. He commented in the Devilgram Why Do People Love Cats that when people invite him places, he tends to accept, but only if it interests him.

Satan's analytic personality lends to his interest in drama stories, and he is especially fond of mystery or detective stories. In Lesson 12, he delights in using his skills to solve the mystery of of a murder than happened on a train in the Human World. He's also a skilled Chess player, and though he complains in one of his Home Screen dialogues that he's never defeated Diavolo at chess, it's implied that he wins a game against him in Lesson 56-12.

His ability to predict the way people will behave or how events will unfold can backfire against him, however, when he's proven wrong. Satan is not the Avatar of Wrath without reason, and can easily become angered when things don't go his way. When he presented MC with rare and expensive gems in the Devilgram For You..., his lack of understanding as to why MC refused his gift angered him. Losing a game of chess to Leviathan in the Being the Oldest Devilgram also set him off, presumably because he knows that he's a talented chess player, and became frustrated when he didn't gain his expected victory.

Despite his outwardly assured appearance, Satan can be very insecure. He worries at times that he's too average, too plain, and lacks an interesting personality. He also can feel like he has no interests or attachments to anything as strongly as his brothers do, as he admits in the Devilgram Be You. This may be why he often fixates on cats and cat-related things.

In the Devilgram The Search for Self, Satan admitted that he feels a sense of emptiness inside him that "seems to disappear" when he plays with cats. Unfortunately for him, Lucifer doesn't allow him to have a pet cat. Issue 3 of the RAD Newspaper explains that when Satan was given permission to have a cat in the past, things "spiraled out of control," and the House of Lamentation was filled with cats.

After that incident, Satan had to be content with feeding and playing with any stray cats that he could find wandering in the house's garden, as he was seen doing in the Devilgram A Very Catty Birthday.

Likes[edit]

  • He absolutely loves cats, as evidenced in the Main Story as well as numerous Devilgrams, chats, and several of his outfits.

Powers and Abilities[edit]

Note: this section may include spoilers.

Satan is the fourth most powerful demon brother and the Avatar of Wrath. As such, anger is the most powerful emotion he experiences and it manifests itself in his magic. In the Devilgram Be You, Satan explains that his rage emits a lot of energy which is too much for humans to handle. In one of Asmodeus's dialogues, he says that Satan potentially has the power to end the world if he is angry enough. When Satan becomes angry in the Devilgram Be You, most of his brothers are afraid of him which further suggests that this might be true. Lucifer is not afraid of Satan's wrath but as shown in Lesson 26, he does seem to view it as a threat or danger. During that lesson, Satan becomes enraged during a food fight in the Ghost Café at Devil's Coast and Lucifer takes action to distract Satan so he doesn't destroy the entire café.

Satan is also particularly adept at curses. In the chat Assignment 1 when Leviathan asks for help on his curses and hexes homework, Mammon and Beelzebub immediately agree that it's a job for Satan. In the chat How to Make Someone Read a Cursed Letter, Satan sends Lucifer several cursed letters. These letters were enchanted to activate if he tried tearing them up or throwing them away without reading them so that Lucifer would be forced to read every single one.

In the Devilgram The Ghost Ship, Satan used magic to break a ship in a bottle in half to remove the ship and replace the ship inside the bottle after repairing the ship (without the use of magic).

Satan does not seem to possess much physical strength. In the chat What's up With the TV? 2, he mentions that he used to be able to pick up the TV but then (unbeknownst to him) it was filled with static spiders so he needed help from Beelzebub.

Story[edit]

Background[edit]

Note: this section may include spoilers.

Satan is the only one of the seven brothers who was not originally an angel. After the Great Celestial War, Satan was created after Lucifer tore off his own wings in a fit of anger towards his Father. It is unknown how Lucifer grew four of his wings back, as Satan specified in the Devilgram The Search for Self that Lucifer tore away all six of them.

Upon his creation, Satan inherited some of Lucifer's memories — which are his only direct connection to Lilith — but has mentioned that these memories are spotty at best. Though he has stated that he remembers Archangel Michael, he does not remember Lucifer's pre-fall behavior and is caught off guard to learn that the brothers didn't always fear Lucifer. He also mentions that, though he has no concrete memories of Lilith, he has inherited Lucifer's love for her.

Shortly after his creation, the Demon King placed him as the fourth-oldest brother based on his power, and gave him his title as the Avatar of Wrath. His brothers taught him about the world and how to experience things outside of anger, with Lucifer having the largest influence.

In Issue 3 of the RAD Newspaper, he's confirmed to be older than Luke.

Lessons 1-20[edit]

When Satan is first introduced, Lucifer implies that looks can be deceiving, and that Satan only seems like a responsible demon at first glance. He continues that Satan may give a smile such as that, but warned MC to be careful, for it is all an act.

Before the fuss about Mammon having made a pact with MC, he and his brother Asmodeus are playing cards with Solomon, with the sorcerer appearing to have the upper hand. After a round, Solomon asks Asmodeus and Satan why they always put down Mammon. He wonders if they shouldn't be a bit more respectful to him, since he is their older brother. Satan ignores Solomon's questions, and relays the news that MC was able to make a pact with Mammon.

The morning after MC made a pact with Mammon, he chastised Asmodeus for laughing at Mammon's situation, only for him to laugh as well.

Missing details on Lesson 3

In Lessons 9 to 11, Satan eventually softens up to Lucifer after a series of events and is entrusted to deliver a speech on Lucifer's behalf.

Relationships[edit]

Note: this section may include spoilers.

Main Character[edit]

Originally, Satan viewed MC as a way to annoy Lucifer, and fed into MC's antics for this purpose. After a series of events in the middle of Season 1, Satan credits MC for improving his understanding of and relationship with Lucifer, and values them greatly for it.

Lucifer[edit]

Satan shares a complicated relationship with Lucifer. Being "born" from Lucifer's anger, Satan spent a lot of his life trying to become his own person and detach himself from Lucifer as much as possible. He dislikes being compared to Lucifer or cooperating with him, though when it comes down to it, they can work together efficiently, as shown in The Escorts's Devilgram. According to the chat A Grimm For Your Thoughts? 1, it is implied that Satan's antagonistic behavior towards Lucifer is a sort of impulse or compulsion; he states that he'd like to stop dedicating so much time to Lucifer, but immediately after begins to scheme about his next prank.

Through Lesson 9-12, where he swaps bodies with Lucifer accidentally, his feelings about Lucifer seem to change a bit. His perspective further changes after he meets with Lucifer back when he was still an angel in season 3. Furthermore, Asmodeus mentions on several occasions that Satan actually likes and looks up to Lucifer. Despite that, however, he still continues to come up with ways to prank or annoy Lucifer.

In Lesson 39-4, after Lucifer recovered from his memory loss, Satan had clearly been concerned for his well-being, but denied it when Asmodeus brought it up.

Mammon[edit]

In general, like the other brothers, Satan finds Mammon annoying. In particular, Satan is annoyed by Mammon's tendency to be loud and his inability to keep a secret. In the Pop Quiz Sun, Sea, and Demons, Satan takes a picture of Lucifer in his swimwear. He plans to use this for blackmail and Mammon wants to use the photo to make money. Mammon ends up saying this loudly enough to Lucifer to hear. When Lucifer confronts them, Mammon spills the beans, which irritates Satan.

Belphegor[edit]

Satan and Belphegor get along well because they share the common goal of annoying Lucifer. In Lesson 17, they founded the "Formerly Anti-Lucifer League" which means they are often seen together plotting Lucifer's downfall.

Belphegor also likes to sleep on Satan's lap, as said in the chat A Kind Brother. Satan claims that this is annoying however he still allows Belphegor to sleep instead of pushing him off or waking him up.

Solomon[edit]

Satan and Solomon get along because they have many things in common, including a mutual love of cats. This is a common topic that comes up in their group chat Cat(3), that they also share with MC.

Another common topic of the chatroom is TV shows. Satan often schedules meetings at Café Lament or Cat's Eye because he wants to share his thoughts on the episodes with Solomon. Similar situations occur when Satan reads a book he likes.

Satan also seems to think that Solomon is good at solving problems. In the chat Beel's Eccentric Behavior 1, Satan texts the group chat to ask for advice because he has noticed that Beelzebub is behaving strangely.

Satan also values Solomon's intellectual prowess. In the chat The Intellectual Group, Satan, Solomon, and MC are assigned a group project. Satan is very impressed with Solomon's ability to read the language on an ancient manuscript and claims that he needs to work harder if he wants to catch up to Solomon. In the chat An Ancient Text, it is revealed that Solomon taught Satan how to read ancient writing from the Human World. Solomon also brought Satan an ancient book of magic and Satan is impressed that Solomon remembered that he wanted to read it because they talked about it a long time ago.

Mephistopheles[edit]

In Lesson 32-16, Belphegor asks Satan if he is friends with Mephistopheles. Satan responds that they are not friends, but rather any enemy of Lucifer's is an ally of his.

Michael[edit]

Satan's only memories of Michael are from Lucifer's eyes. However, when asked about Michael in Lesson 43-19, Satan responded that Michael has a presence that's difficult to put into words, but that he "was everything humans imagine an angel to be and more."

Etymology[edit]

  • In Hebrew, Satan (שָׂטָן) is a generic noun meaning "accuser" or "adversary."
