"The scummy second-born who is greedy for all the money in the world. The witches are his big weakness."
— Mammon's Student ID

Mammon is a demon whose first appearance in Obey Me!'s Main Story was the game's very first phone call in Lesson 1-1. He has six brothers, and as the second-most powerful of the seven, he holds the title of "second-born." He also possesses the title "Avatar of Greed" and is a representative of that sin. As one of the main characters in Obey Me!, he is included in the game's Intimacy system.

Appearance[edit]

Mammon has short, shaggy white hair, and sienna-colored skin. His eyes are a gradient of cobalt blue and yellow, and his nails are painted white. He typically wears gold stud earrings, as well as two silver rings on both the ring and pinky fingers of his right hand. Mammon and Satan are the only brothers whose final design was not changed after their original concept arts.

As seen in the official height chart, Mammon is the second-shortest of the seven brothers, and nearly the exact same height as Asmodeus.

RAD Uniform

Mammon RAD Uniform full.png

Mammon's RAD Uniform is the most unkempt of the seven brothers. He wears the typical charcoal grey jacket with gold accents, and matching charcoal-colored pants with red stripes along the sides. However, the jacket — which is shorter in length than the standard uniform — has all of the buttons left undone, and both zippers on the sleeves have been left open. His standard red-bordered belt hangs unbelted at his sides.

The teal shirt he wears beneath the jacket also has the first few buttons left undone, there are visible wrinkles throughout, and his saffron yellow tie hangs loosely tied from his neck. His leather shoes are the standard charcoal grey.

Personality[edit]

Mammon's title "Avatar of Greed" is well-earned, and of the seven brothers, he is arguably one of the most constantly influenced by his sin. He is always looking to make more money or to spend more money, and this single-minded focus doesn't leave him much room to worry about the consequences. A D.D.D. app called "Demon Brain Scan" was used in Beelzebub's Devilgram Unspoken Affection to show that 90% of Mammon's brain is taken up by "money."

His brothers are often unwillingly dragged into his schemes and left to pay the price alongside him, as in the Pop Quizzes Summer Festival and Welcome to the Bunny Show. Mammon also often steals from his brothers, or borrows money from them with no intention of paying it back. Leviathan especially is a sibling he borrows from often, as seen in the very first lesson of the Main Story, which led to Mammon being bribed by both Leviathan and MC into becoming MC's first pact. Making a pact with MC was a decision he made impulsively, which is something he very often does.

Mammon's greed also can make him desire things not for their own sake, but because he knows other people desire them. In addition to borrowing from Leviathan and not giving the money back, Leviathan explained to MC in Lesson 1-15 that some time ago, Mammon won a Seraphina figure that he refused to let Leviathan have, not because Mammon himself wanted it, but because he knew his brother did.

Mammon being an impulsive, greedy troublemaker is largely the reason why his brothers often don't treat him kindly. In Belphegor's Devilgram, Hatred, Beelzebub commented that all of Mammon's brothers look down on him. His brothers also frequently insult him, calling him "scumbag" or "idiot" most often. Mammon is always very vocal in denying those insults. He desperately cares what other people think about him, even people he doesn't know. In Lesson 1, when Lucifer gave him the task of watching over MC during their stay in the Devildom, he did his best to ensure MC understood that he didn't agree to the task because he was scared of Lucifer. He also insisted in the chat Horror Movie Night that he wasn't afraid while watching a horror movie, despite it being obvious he was. He also becomes ecstatically happy whenever he's given praises, as seen virtually any time that MC chooses to compliment him.

Mammon tends to talk loudly in an attempt to seem confident, and to cover up any emotions he sees as weakness, from fear to tenderness. He also often refers to himself as "Ore-sama" and "Mammon-sama." "-sama" is a Japanese honorific meant for those of higher rank, and "ore" is an informal pronoun for "me" or "I." Thus, "ore-sama" roughly translates to "The Great Me."

Despite his insecurities and the way his brothers often treat him, Mammon cares deeply for all of his siblings. He often plays the role of mediator between Lucifer and his younger siblings when they argue or are in trouble, as he did for Belphegor in the Devilgram Paying Back What's Owed. When not personally involved in the family feuds, he often does his best to talk both parties down, or come up with a plan to get his brothers back on better terms. It was Mammon's idea in Lesson 10 to use Leviathan's Dogi✩Maji✩Memorium game to give Lucifer and Satan a common goal to work toward, and thus help them get along better.

However, as level-headed as Mammon is capable of being, there have been times when he lost his temper and transformed into his demon form. One example occurred in the Devilgram Let Your Hair Down, when he, Lucifer, and Leviathan walk in on the younger brothers (sans Belphegor) bad-mouthing the eldest three. Another example is in the Devilgram Levi Dreams of Sleep, when Mammon learns that Leviathan spent the night with MC. A third example occurred in the chat Part-Timer Mammon 2, where Mammon was fired from his job after getting into a brawl with a customer, which resulted in a café being destroyed.

His worst subject at RAD is hexes and curses, as he admits himself in Lesson 29-2.

While not considered to be as good as Asmodeus, Belphegor commented in Lesson 47-14 that Mammon has a talent for singing, and as seen in the same lesson, is very proud of his singing voice. He also once sang lead vocals in a band at the RAD school festival.

Powers and Abilities[edit]

Note: this section may include spoilers.

Mammon is the second most powerful demon brother and the Avatar of Greed. As such, Mammon has special powers involving money. When Satan introduced Mammon in Lesson 1, he mentioned that Mammon governs and oversees all forms of greed. He also explained that when Mammon takes a liking to someone, that person will find themselves awash in money, but if he decides to break it off with that person, Mammon also has the ability to leave them penniless. In Lesson 2, it is mentioned that if money is involved in games (i.e. gambling), Mammon will make sure it's his.

Mammon is shown to have great control over his demon powers. Unlike the rest of the characters, Mammon rarely transforms into his demon form to be threatening.

He also has crow familiars, and is able to communicate with them. This was first mentioned in the chat Reporting In (obtained from Lesson 32-16 Hard), and brought up again in Lesson 75 Hard. Mammon also used this ability to send a crow to check on MC in the Daily Chat To Mt. Imminent Death 7.

Mammon is also known to be one of the fastest demons, and he has more stamina than other demons. This is mentioned in several Devilgrams, such as Test of Endurance and Beach Flag Race!. Mammon's stamina is also shown in Lucifer's 2022 birthday event, when the brothers all ran out of the House of Lamentation to meet with Lucifer. When they arrived, they are all out of breath except for Mammon and Beelzebub.

He has also been shown to be physically strong. For example, in the chat Mammon's Training 1, Mammon was able to pick up Beelzebub, who is known to be extremely heavy.

Story[edit]

Background[edit]

Note: this section may include spoilers.

Mammon was originally an archangel that was under Michael's tutelage. However, as mentioned by Asmodeus in Lesson 44-7, Michael couldn't handle his mischievous and rebellious nature. It the same Lesson, it was made clear that his personality as an angel was much like his later demon self, including his proclivity for greed. Stunts like trying to sell a bunch of pigeon feathers from the Human World by claiming they come off of Raphael caused his brothers to worry he was on the verge of being cast out of the Celestial Realm.

He was eventually turned over to Lucifer, who managed to straighten him out, and Mammon's been loyal to him since. He was eventually promoted to the rank of Throne and became Lucifer's assistant, as seen in Lesson 44-7. He also used to watch over the younger angels such as Beelzebub, Belphegor, and Lilith, who always gave him a run-around.

He rallied with Lucifer and his brothers in the Great Celestial War, but when they lost and fell into the Devildom they became demons. It was during this time that he served as a strong support for Lucifer as they all tried to adjust to living in the Devildom. He also had a hand in "raising" Satan when he was born, but not much is known to how much he contributed.

In Lesson 11, Mammon claims to be well over 5,000 years old.

Mammon sometimes works as a model, at least once for the fashion magazine "Devil Style" published by Majolish. One of his photoshoots was titled "Falling for You."

Mammon stated that he sleeps in the nude in the chat Going Commando. However, in his Christmas Tree animation, he's seen wearing a white sleeveless shirt and gray sweatpants.

Main Story[edit]

Lessons 1-20[edit]

For reasons not specified, Mammon did not appear during student council meeting when MC first arrived in the Devildom. He is then called by MC's new D.D.D., and told that he's assigned to look after them by Lucifer during their stay in the Devildom. He initially refuses, but after Lucifer threatens him, he quickly agrees. He shows no interest in the matter, claiming that he was only doing so as Lucifer had ordered it.

When guiding MC through the House of Lamentation, they run into Leviathan who, clearly upset, insisted Mammon hand over the money he owed him. Mammon pleaded with Leviathan to give him more time. One way or another, Mammon escapes the situation and runs away before Leviathan can further hound him.

Later on, Leviathan suggests that MC should make a pact with Mammon, so they would be able to order Mammon to give Leviathan his money back. However, to form the pact, Leviathan claims that MC will have to have a bargaining chip, something that Mammon would do anything to get his hands on. In this case, it is Mammon's credit card that Lucifer previously confiscated.

After successfully obtaining the credit card from the kitchen fridge, Mammon happens upon Leviathan and MC defrosting the card in the microwave. Mammon yells at them to stop microwaving the card, then begs for "Goldie" — his treasured credit card's nickname — to be given back to him. Leviathan states that in order for them to give back the card, Mammon will first have to make a pact with MC. Mammon, at first, refuses, but when threatened with Lucifer's name, hastily agrees to Leviathan's terms and officially makes a pact with MC.

After finding out about the incident, the other demon brothers tease and poke fun at Mammon over breakfast, calling him a "sorry excuse for a demon."

The morning after, MC tries to get past Lucifer and explore what's up the stairs, Mammon strikes up a conversation over breakfast, complaining about the fact that he's not allowed to eat MC. MC asks Mammon what's at the top of the stairs, who sighs and says that they are sticking their nose where it doesn't belong. Mammon refuses to tell MC any more about the stairs - until he is accused of being scared of Lucifer.

Finally, he cracks and informs MC of how to distract Lucifer, which requires a vinyl edition copy of the soundtrack from The Tale of the Seven Lords, currently in Leviathan's possession. MC then requests for Mammon to help, and he is forced to oblige. They go straight to Leviathan's room to ask him to lend them the soundtrack.

They are promptly denied entry to Leviathan's room, as he refuses to do them any favors. However, Solomon shows up, and with the aid of an authenticated secret phrase is granted entry to Leviathan's room. When Mammon and MC try to repeat the same secret phrase, they are denied access (even if MC chooses other options). Mammon comes to the conclusion that since Solomon was allowed in for being a Tale of the Seven Lords (TSL for short) nerd, the solution for MC is to become a TSL nerd themself.

Mammon is forced to join MC for the 12-hour TSL Full Series DVD Marathon Night. Beelzebub joins them for the food. Mammon ends up getting surprisingly attached to TSL and its characters, even ending up sobbing over the show. The day after, Mammon quizzes MC on their TSL knowledge. However, Leviathan appeared, claiming that he heard from Lucifer that MC was trying to suck up to him by becoming a TSL nerd. MC then challenges Leviathan to see who the bigger TSL fan was. At first, Leviathan is reluctant but agrees to the challenge after MC provokes him, calling him a chicken.

Later on after MC discloses Satan and Beelzebub's advice on making Leviathan jealous, Mammon boasts that they only did so because of him (though it's clearly not true). He agrees that MC needs to find someway to make his brother jealous and accompanies them to the one person that can.

At the TSL showdown, the questions that MC was given are significantly easier than the questions given to Leviathan. However, after three questions each, they are both tied on points. After pulling their trump card, Leviathan flies into an envious rage and proceeds to attack MC in his demon form. Mammon tries to save them, but slips up and not able to get there in time, allowing Lucifer time to step in and save MC.

Mammon is extremely frustrated that he wasn't the one to save MC, and while tending to their sprained wrist, he states that next time their life is in danger, he should be MC's only choice in terms of saving them.

When uncovered the mystery of Belphegor and the identity of the person in the attic, MC hears Lucifer and Beelzebub's discussion about Belphegor and his state in the human world with Beelzebub insisting that Lucifer should forgive their brother. MC discovers Mammon who was also eavesdropping on the two.

Mammon states that the brothers were once angels that resided in the Celestial Realm before they fell from grace. Back then, Lucifer loved and was especially fond of Beelzebub, Belphegor, and Lilith however that all changed when they arrived at the Devildom. After pledging loyalty to Diavolo, Lucifer would follow his desires no matter what the cost.

Relationships[edit]

Note: this section may include spoilers.

Main Character[edit]

At first, Mammon was annoyed with MC because he was forced to act as their guardian, even more so after they tricked him into a pact he only agreed to in order to get his credit card back from Leviathan. However, after spending more time together with MC, Mammon's feelings quickly deepened for them, though he tries to deny it when others point it out. He often has trouble expressing his feelings towards MC, becoming embarrassed or acting like he doesn't care. However, he often becomes jealous when someone else is taking up MC's attention or gets too close to them. He also keeps reminding MC (and everyone else) that he's the first demon MC made a pact with.

He's also interested in anything that could deepen the relationship between him and MC, as seen in Lesson 43 when he heard a rumor that the coffee at the Angel Halo's Café will make your crush fall madly in love with that person when they drink it. A similar situation occurred in the Devilgram Lemon Parfait Lovers, where if two people shared a lemon parfait at Lament's Café, they deepen their relationship.

Lucifer[edit]

Mammon seems to fear Lucifer's power, often trying to hide from him when he did something he knows that would upset Lucifer, but he tries to deny it whenever someone comments on it. Lucifer tends to question Mammon about the latest trouble he's gotten himself into and Mammon always tries to cover them up with lies - without success, as he ends up getting a punishment from Lucifer anyway. According to Mammon, Lucifer usually punishes him with skipping dinner or hanging him upside down. In Lesson 46-C, he stated that once Lucifer tickled him to where he laughed so hard he was humiliated.

Mammon also expresses annoyance towards Lucifer, sometimes poking fun of him when he thinks Lucifer isn't around. He dislikes that Lucifer often singles him out, even when he's not the one at fault.

In Lesson 27, they get into an argument which causes them to not speak to each other for several days, but the tension seems to disappear between them over time. Later, MC can tell Mammon that he should stand up to Lucifer, to which Mammon says he's tried before, but Lucifer always gets back at him and it just makes the problem even worse.

But in truth, as expressed by Asmodeus in Lesson 27, and even admitted by Mammon himself when he's forced to be honest (in Lesson 33), Mammon respects and admires Lucifer deeply. Back in the Celestial Realm, it was Lucifer who was able to get through to Mammon, who in turn followed Lucifer around and listened to his every word. He also knows Lucifer well, as in Lesson 28, he gives MC a hint about where Lucifer spends his time when he's upset.

Belphegor[edit]

While Mammon is not treated with respect by his younger brothers, he is still quite protective of them, especially Belphegor. In the chat An Unexpected Approach 1, when Lucifer demanded to know who broke one of the paintings in the House of Lamentation, Mammon took the blame (much the surprise of the brothers). However, as revealed in the second part of the chat, it turned out that Belphegor had knocked against the painting while half-asleep, causing it to break. In the Devilgram Paying Back What's Owed, Mammon also protected Belphegor from Lucifer when he skipped his classes at RAD to sleep all day, reminding him to ease up on his younger siblings as it was shortly after their fall from the Celestial Realm.

Michael[edit]

When asked about Michael in Lesson 43-19, Mammon replied that he's "a demon masquerading as an angel." He apparently gave Mammon a number of terrible punishments when he was still an angel. Mammon also said that Michael was very similar to Lucifer in attitude.

Etymology[edit]

  • Mammon in Hebrew (ממון) means "money."
  • In Aramaic (מָמוֹנָא), it means "profit, wealth".
